During his artistic journey in China, an international exhibition visit to the Xi’an Museum and the discovery of the Terracotta Warriors deeply shaped his relationship with history, symbolism, and the spiritual dimensions of cultural memory. This encounter intensified his desire to explore Kongo cosmology and ancestral wisdom as pathways toward understanding identity, reality, and human experience beyond surface appearances.
Later, through seasons of personal and spiritual confrontation while living in the United States, his search for truth led him toward a renewed Christian faith. This transformation became a defining foundation of his artistic practice, where heritage, spirituality, scripture, and contemporary expression continue to exist in dialogue through painting and storytelling.
The Journey of Becoming
From the Democratic Republic of Congo to China and the United States, Benj Kinenga’s journey has been shaped by cultural memory, spiritual reflection, and the search for meaning through artistic expression. Raised within the symbolic and spiritual heritage of Kongo culture, he developed an early sensitivity to the relationship between memory, community, symbolism, and the unseen dimensions of human experience—foundations that continue to shape the philosophy and visual language of his work.
His artistic and spiritual exploration deepened profoundly during his years in China while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the Nanjing University of the Arts. During the encounter with the Terracotta Warriors, Kinenga experienced a transformative confrontation enduring spiritual presence of cultural memory preserved through material form. This experience awakened a renewed desire to explore Kongo cosmology and ancestral wisdom as pathways toward understanding identity, reality, and humanity beyond surface appearances. Alongside exhibitions, artistic collaborations, and cross-cultural experiences, these encounters significantly shaped the evolution of his contemporary visual language.
Later, he pursuit the truth led him toward a renewed Christian faith that became central to both his life and artistic practice. Through painting, storytelling, and contemporary visual expression, he continues to develop a body of work rooted in memory, faith, and the journey of becoming—where struggle becomes transformation and the visible points toward the unseen.
